A bugle call traditionally performed at military funerals, “Taps” provided a suitably sombre soundtrack for the reigning champions bowing out at the group stage.
A 2-0 defeat to South Korea ensured the Germans’ exit, with Sweden and Mexico qualifying from Group F instead.
