Dodgy defending in Portugal sends Southgate's side into third-place play-off.

England were beaten 3-1 by Holland in Portugal on Thursday night in the semi-finals of the first ever UEFA Nations League tournament.

The hopes of a trophy for Gareth Southgate’s side were dashed as their opponents overturned a one goal deficit after extra time at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques.

Memphis Depay produced twice as many shots on target (6) as the entire England squad combined in the Nations League semi-final.

An extremely tight offside decision given by VAR disallowed a Jesse Lingard goal and helped the Dutch to the last stage of the competition.

Some disastrous defending then led to an own goal by England defender Kyle Walker.

Yet more passing around at the back meant they conceded a third 17 minutes later.

These were the best tweets and jokes as England are beaten 3-1 by Netherlands in a UEFA Nations League semi-final:

England fans just 15 minutes away from classing the Uefa Nations League as a stupid friendly competition they never wanted to win anyway.

VAR is checking to see if England are any good at playing out from the back….

Important to remember that the Nations League was only a proper competition and a welcome addition to the calendar when England were good at it.

Disappointed England fans leave the stadium and go back into the Guimarães night.

If you're a resident of Guimarães, maybe just stay indoors for the rest of the night, yeah?

— Paddy Power (@paddypower) June 6, 2019

England wouldn't have lost that game with Tarkowski and Mee at the back. There, I've said it!

If we’re being honest De Ligt has absolutely nothing on John Stones
