The referee signalled for VAR to be used during Saturday’s match between Always Ready and Bolívar in Bolivia’s top flight, which doesn’t use the technology.
Bolívar were leading 1-0 through Vladimir Castellón 85th minute goal at the Estadio Municipal El Alto when an opponent went down in the box deep into stoppage time.

Protests from the Always Ready players and staff ensued, with a penalty awarded following a moment’s deliberation – and a mistaken VAR signal.
To add to the farce, a Bolívar player was level with the penalty taker as he took the spot kick – and right in front of the referee.

The shot hits the post and Bolívar managed to hang on for the win in the Clausura fixture.
