A Nigeria fan shouted “over the bar” repeatedly at Iceland’s Gylfi Sigurðsson as he stepped up to take a penalty during their World Cup clash.
Yelled with gusto from behind the goal, the mantra had the desired effect as Everton’s Sigurðsson sent the VAR-awarded spot kick over the bar.
The supporter’s new catchphrase then turns from hopeful to triumphant as he continues to air it in between delighted whoops and hollers while others turn to photograph him.
Seemingly a Nigerian custom, “over the bar” was also the refrain from the schoolchildren in this clip:

A 2-0 win for Nigeria threw Group D wide open, with every team still aiming for qualification to the next phase other than Croatia who are already assured of top spot.
