Former Premier League star Hermann Hreiðarsson lost two pairs of sunglasses celebrating VAR awarding Iceland a penalty against Nigeria.

A friend watched forlornly as Hreiðarsson inadvertently flung them off his shirt – presumably his was the second pair.

To make matters worse, Gylfi Sigurðsson missed the resulting penalty as Nigeria threw Group D wide open with a 2-0 win.

Iceland can still qualify with a win against a Croatia side that’s likely to rest players having already won the group, while Nigeria play beleaguered Argentina.

A centre-back with 89 caps for Iceland, Hreiðarsson played for Crystal Palace, Ipswich, Charlton and Portsmouth during his time in English football.
