A Moroccan listening to the Benin match on the radio misled his fellow fans in a bar to believe that Hakim Ziyech scored his 97th minute penalty.

Hervé Renard’s side were awarded a spot kick deep into stoppage time of Friday’s Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 tie at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo.

With the score level at 1-1, Morocco would have all but sealed their place in the quarter-finals had Ajax star Ziyech found the back of the net.

He failed to convert but one man listening on the radio reported otherwise, sparking wild celebrations from those relying on TV coverage that was around a minute behind.

As they turn to cheer the would-be winner when the moment arrives onscreen, they are dismayed to see what really happened and the joyous scenes are abruptly halted.
