Chester joint manager Anthony Johnson exclaimed “that was hours and hours” after his team scored from an unusual free kick routine at Darlington.

The Seals won 1-0 in Wednesday’s National League North match at Blackwell Meadows, with Simon Grand scoring as a result of the deceptive set piece.

They had initially looked to have made a mess of it, eliciting a cry of “f***ing hell” loud enough to be heard in this clip.

However it turned out to be a ruse, with the ball played sideways to the edge of the penalty area where Anthony Dudley was waiting.

He quickly slipped in Akwasi Asante but the Dutch striker miscued his shot, causing the ball to loop up towards the back post.

There Simon Grand was lurking to nod home, securing all three points and – as you can hear – a cry of “that was hours and hours” from Johnson.

Whether he was speaking proudly or ironically – or a little bit of both – is unclear, but either way the implication is that they’d worked on it on the training ground.
