Watch as Benfica manager Jorge Jesus helps a fan struggling to fight off police after running on to the pitch following the team’s 1-0 away victory at Vitória de Guimarães.
Benfica secured the win thanks to an own-goal from Guimarães forward Marco Matias.
This, it seems, was cause for riotous celebration from the Portuguese Benfica fans. Some invaded the pitch following the final whistle, with others choosing to rip up seats in the away end.
In this clip you can see the police and stadium stewards in place, attempting to control the situation by facing the over-enthusiastic fans and grabbing anyone who ran on to the field of play.
Benfica manager Jorge Jesus is seen behind the police line watching the situation unfold before he is suddenly moved to intervene when one fan, who was being handled particularly roughly, is bundled to the floor by several security staff.
In the midst of a series of heated exchanges the coach jumps into the mêlée and tries to separate the fan from the clutches of his assailants in order to provide him with a safe passage back to the stands.
Unfortunately, in the end it appears all this effort has been in vain as Jesus is himself removed from the incident and the fan in question is taken away to meet his fate.
