Manchester United were held to a draw by League One Rochdale in the third round of the Carabao Cup and had to rely on penalties to progress in the competition.

It was 1-1 after 90 minutes at Old Trafford on Tuesday night but the Premier League side’s blushes were spared after a successful penalty shootout.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s team put up a good fight against a United still in turmoil.

As rival fans enjoyed the game and United supporters despaired, these were the best of the tweets and jokes as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Man Utd struggle past Rochdale in the League Cup:

Very pleased to make it to half time Vs Rochdale and not concede.

Hopefully we can nick a goal in the second half and cause an upset.

Rochdale's record signing, Paul Connor, cost £150,000. Manchester United pay more than that every week for Alexis Sanchez to play for Inter Milan.

It’ll probably beneficial for us to get knocked out tonight by Rochdale so we can focus on the league and not getting relegated

A Wan Bissaka goal line clearance against Rochdale could turn out to be Man Utd’s highlight of the season.
