Lawson’s brand new single “Taking Over Me” comes out on Sunday, so Football Burp caught up with front man Andy Brown for a natter about his beloved Liverpool FC…
Are you happy with the appointment of Brendan Rodgers?
I think it’s great, I really do. When we had the shortlist of managers he was definitely up there for me because I think he’s got a really good knowledge of football, and he likes to play good football. There was talk about Rafael Benitez coming back, and Andre Villas-Boas, but I definitely think Rodgers was the right appointment and he’s made some good signings so far.
Were you disappointed with the way Kenny Dalglish was treated, or did it just have to be done?
I love Dalglish, and I think what he did in a short space of time was great, but I think it was the right time to move onto a new manager and a new era, definitely.
Andy Carroll: would you like to see him stay or go?
Such a tough question, this. I think I’d like to see him stay because he’s definitely a threat and he#s going to be a regular for England in the next few years so hopefully he can come good for us. I read today that he’s been linked with West Ham United very closely but I’d definitely like to see him stay because he’s a good outlet. We need that big man up front. I don’t think he was treated fairly last season – he needs a run of games. He could be prolific for us with the right service.
Which areas of the squad would you like to see strengthened?
I’d like to see us bring in a class winger. We’ve been linked with Gaston Ramirez and he’d be a good signing. I’d like to see someone like Adam Johnson, an out-and-out wide man, because we’ve got quite a lot down the middle now in Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Charlie Adam, possibly Joe Allen, Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shelvey. We’ve just signed Fabio Borini but if we get rid of Carroll then I’d sign another striker and a winger, maybe even two.
In that respect were you disappointed to see Maxi Rodríguez go?
I like Maxi but I think it was the right thing for him to leave, he’s 31 and I think he had his time at Liverpool to be honest.
What do you think of Charlie Adam trying to kill Gareth Bale again?
I know, yeah! I haven’t actually seen the tackle but I read a lot about it on Twitter. There was a bit of previous beef with them, wasn’t there? I don’t know much about it to be honest but I like Adam, he’s a good player I think.
Have you seen the new Liver Bird mascot? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
No, I’ve not seen it. I’ll have to look into that.
In that case, step right this way! So, what are your minimum expectations for the 2012-13 season?
I think it’s going to be a tough season but if you ask any Liverpool fan I think the minimum expectation is top four. I definitely think we can do it if we sign a couple more players, although I don’t think we can challenge for the Premiership.
Have you managed to get to Anfield much over the years?
Yeah, our family have a season ticket so I go whenever I’m home, but we’ve been so busy with the band lately and I’m living in London now so it’s tough. I went to the FA Cup final against Chelsea and also the semi-final against Everton.
Would you be able to name the first, best and worst game you’ve ever been to?
The worst game was against Chelsea at Anfield when we got beat 4-1. I remember Frank Lampard scored a penalty and Didier Drogba tore us to shreds. I can’t actually remember the first game I went to because I was so young but the best game I went to would probably have been against Juventus in the Champions League when Luis García scored that volley from 30 yards. I was sitting right behind it, it was amazing. European nights at Anfield are special.
Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the Reds players you’ve seen in your time as a fan, who would you pick?
Great questions! Gerrard would be there, Fernando Torres, obviously Pepe Reina in goal, Sami Hyypiä at the back and Xavi Alonso in midfield with Gerrard. I don’t think many would beat that.
Andy Brown, thank you.
