Talking FC Twente and Holland with… Bakermat

Holland's finest young deep house sensation tells us how Man Utd can get the best out of Louis van Gaal.

Bakermat… Dutch ado

Bakermat is Holland’s finest young deep house producer and it just so happens that he also rather likes his football.

In anticipation of the forthcoming UK release of his “One Day” single – a track that’s already reached #1 in France, Netherlands and Germany, and #2 in Belgium – we collared Bakermat for a chat about the Dutch national team, Louis van Gaal and his beloved FC Twente.

First, though, check out the video for “One Day”…

Steve McClaren was rather successful as manager of your club, wasn’t he? It rebuilt his reputation after his calamitous spell in charge of the England team.

Very successful, yes! I gather he’s ruined his reputation again since then.

He did, at Nottingham Forest – but he’s currently doing a good job at Derby County.

Oh right, I didn’t know that.

So how was the 2013-14 season for FC Twente?

Not that good. It was just mediocre. I didn’t get to follow them that closely this season because I’ve been too busy with the music.

Do you know if “One Day” will be used for the World Cup at all? Perhaps in conjunction with the Holland team?

I hope so but I don’t know. No one’s asked to use it but I’m open to any offers!

Will you be able to watch much of the World Cup this summer?

Well, I’ll be in Brazil for a while as I have a gig there, and I’d like to go to a match. The rest of my summer is very busy so I don’t think I’ll have a lot of time to watch it.

How do you rate Holland’s chances of going all the way?

At about ten per cent. That’s very pessimistic, I know.

Were you as pessimistic as that going into the last World Cup? Holland finished as runners-up in 2010, albeit Euro 2012 was a disaster.

Oh, at the last World Cup I thought like eighty per cent! The team’s not the same any more – the players now just aren’t that good.

You’ve always got half a chance with Robin van Persie up front…

Yeah, but he’s never in shape when he’s in the Dutch team, which is a bummer.

Do you think Louis van Gaal will do well at Manchester United?

Of course. I think he’s a very good coach, although it depends – he’s kind of like a soccer dictator so the club has to cooperate with his style.

If they do then the club will gain success, but they have to listen to him and do what he says and I don’t know if Manchester United will do that.

Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the Dutch players you’ve seen in your time as a football fan, who would you pick?

I’ll go for Sander Boschker as my goalkeeper, not because he’s the best but because he was very loyal to FC Twente for a long time. It’s been years since he played at a professional level but he’s still a hero to me.

Jaap Stam in defence, then Patrick Kluivert, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dennis Bergkamp in attack. I like attackers so it’s a pretty offence-heavy team!

Bakermat releases “One Day” on July 6th 2014. Check in at Shoot Matchday for more.
