GUN release their new album Frantic on March 23rd, so we caught up with the band’s guitarist Jools Gizzi for a natter about his beloved Celtic…
How did you come to support Celtic?
I first started to support my team Glasgow Celtic when my dad used to take me to the games back in the ’70s. We lived a stone’s throw away from Parkhead.
What are your expectations for the rest of the season? And what are your thoughts on the season so far?
My expectations for the rest of the season is Celtic will win the treble, my thoughts on the season so far? I think it’s been good – Aberdeen and Dundee Utd have been giving Celtic a run for their money, but I thinks that’s down to Celtic playing so poorly at the beginning of the season.
Celtic at the beginning of the season were playing pretty awfully and couldn’t get a settled starting eleven and I think that was down to the manager Ronny Deila as this is his first season at the club and obviously it’s taken him time to suss out his players and their best positions.
But now Celtic are playing really good football and look well in control of every game they play in, from front to middle to back.
Do you think the manager is doing a good job? If not, who would you like to see replace him?
I think the manager is doing a really good job. He took over from Neil Lennon who had a pretty successful Celtic team and now Deila has put his own stamp on it.
I really think he’ll win the treble in his first season which is really difficult to achieve and he deserves it because he had a lot of doubters at the beginning. If he wasn’t doing a good job then my choice would be the “Special One” Mourinho hahaha.
Which areas of the team/squad would you like to see strengthened?
I’d like us to get a really good striker who’s gonna start every game. We’re still chopping and changing on that front, so I’d like it if we could find another Henrik Larsson! He only cost us £600,000 and the rest is history.
Have you managed to get to the ground much to watch them over the years?
Haven’t managed to get to Celtic Park as much as I would like this season because of the writing and recording of the album. The last game I was at was the Scottish League Cup semi-final, Celtic 2 Rangers 0. What a great day!
Would you be able to name the first, best and worst games you’ve ever been to?
First game I went to was Celtic v Hibernian I think with my dad in the ’70s. Best games I’ve been to would be every game we’ve beaten Rangers. Worst games would be every game we’ve been beaten by Rangers.
But also going to the Uefa Cup final in in Seville, I’ll never forget that day – 80,000 Celtic fans went and took over Seville, what a great day, but obviously the result hurt with Porto winning the game!
Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the players you’ve seen play for your team in your time as a fan, who would you pick?
Larsson, Dalglish, McGrain, Hay and Bonner.
