VIDEO: Sydney player hits head on table next to the pitch

Club launches campaign to kick tables out of Australian football after Michael Zullo came close to serious injury.

Watch as Sydney player Michael Zullo hits his head on a table set up by the side of the pitch for use by the fourth official during their 2-1 A-League win over Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old Australia international came within centimetres of serious injury at the Allianz Stadium after crashing head first into the table following an aerial challenge early in the second half.

Chief executive Tony Pignata was “horrified” by the seemingly foreseeable accident and the club has now started a campaign to kick pitch-side tables out of Australian football.

Pignata is reported to have said:

I was horrified to be honest, I thought he could have been seriously hurt.

I spoke to the fourth official after the game, they hardly used the table.

Given the proximity of our sight lines, I don’t think we should have a table out there like that.

I had a meeting with the stadium straight after the game and their operations manager told me the same thing.

It’s something we will seriously look at because it was a sickening clash.

Remarkably Zullo was able to continue after hitting his head on the table and played the full ninety minutes.
