Play was briefly stopped towards the end of the game when a solo male skydiver and his parachute landed on the field of play to the applause of the crowd, while narrowly missing one of the players.

The man was reportedly taking part in a charity skydive and had been forced to make an emergency landing due to “low cloud”.

BBC Sport spoke to a couple of witnesses:

Onlooker Joel Holt said when the man landed, there was a “big cheer” from the 900-strong crowd.

He said the man then went round high-fiving people in the crowd before being escorted away.

Mr Holt described the incident as “a shock”, and “not something you see every day”.

A Salisbury City spokesman said the man was an “experienced skydiver” taking part in the South Coast Skydive in aid of the charity Clic Sargent.

He said the man had dived from 15,000ft, but encountered heavy low cloud so missed the airfield and had to make a quick decision to land on the pitch.

The spokesman confirmed the man was escorted from the ground carrying his parachute, and was interviewed briefly by the police and a match safety officer before leaving without charge.

He said the incident “went down very well” with both sets of fans who “took it in good humour”.

Chester’s Danny Higginbotham gave his view on the incident via Twitter:

The most bizarre thing I have ever seen on a football pitch happened today. Half way through the second half out of no where

A parachutist landed on the pitch. No idea whete he was supposed to land but he hit the ground hard. #bizarre

@Ed_W0od he obviously miscalculated then. There's an airport near where I used to train but I don't remember any planes landing on the pitch

Far from being heralded as a hero though, the video blurb accuses the skydiver of being an “idiot”:

During a Saturday match between Conference Premier sides Salisbury City and Chester City, this Idiot parachuted onto the pitch to the applause of dozens of spectators, then calmly gathered up his parachute while players and a referee looked on, seemingly bewildered and mildly annoyed.

The harmless-seeming Idiot appears to have a head-mounted camera, suggesting that first-person footage of the aerial pitch invasion may be floating around somewhere. We’ll keep an eye out.
