A fan invading the pitch stopped Cristiano Ronaldo getting on the score sheet during the closing stages of Real Madrid’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool.
His team may have been comfortably leading 3-1 but Ronaldo was no doubt itching to make his mark on an occasion which saw him get comprehensively upstaged by Gareth Bale.
He advances down Liverpool’s left-hand side while a man in a white T-shirt suddenly appears to his right, angling his run as if inviting a pass – albeit he may have strayed offside.
Although it’s not long before he’s bundled to the floor and dragged away by stewards, he does just enough to close off arguably Ronaldo’s best avenue of opportunity.
With space no longer available out wide, Ronaldo dithers with the ball in front of Virgil van Dijk before shooting tamely at Loris Karius – but the whistle has already gone.
Transpiring as it did in stoppage time, it was to be Ronaldo’s last chance of a goal.
