Defending a cross, Mexico’s Jesús Gallardo headed the ball out for a corner and into the back of a steward’s head during a 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica.

The pitch at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas for Mexico’s penalties win was protected from pitch invaders by a ring of security officials.

Facing the fans, the stewards behind the goal appeared particularly vulnerable to a direct hit on Saturday night.

Indeed, one was caught unawares by a Jesús Gallardo header that whacked straight into the back of his head after Costa Rican Joel Campbell crossed the ball into Mexico’s penalty area.
