A linesman’s flag fell off during Liverpool 5-2 Roma, leaving him to rule out Roberto Firmino’s offside goal with just a stick.

Fans behind the goal can be seen bursting into laughter as the assistant referee earnestly raises his stick, drawing inevitable comparisons with Harry Potter.

Jürgen Klopp’s side ran rampant for much of the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield, before allowing their opponents back into the tie with two late strikes.

Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored twice, but the star of the show was arguably this assistant referee and his faulty flag.

After a desperate scramble on the touchline to get it replaced, it even broke again – and all within the opening five minutes.

The farcical scenes were the prelude to a thrilling encounter, one which is tantalisingly poised given how Roma overcame a three-goal deficit to dispatch Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
