The lights went out shortly before half-time in Club América’s opening GNP Cup match against Deportivo Toluca.

América beat Toluca 2-0 with the help of an own goal in the mini tournament of eight Liga MX teams being held in advance of the new season in Mexico.

The ‘virtual stands’ and floodlights failed at Club Universidad Nacional’s Estadio Olímpico Universitario in the 45th minute of the Group A game.

Play had to be paused after the stadium was plunged into darkness, with only the electronic advertising boards surrounding the pitch still illuminated.
