Atlético Madrid’s Diego Costa purposefully coughed on reporters following the Spanish side’s win over Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 second leg.

The holders were defeated on the night and knocked out of the competition after conceding three goals in extra time despite being 1-0 up after 90 minutes.

As the visitors attempted to gain a foothold in the match, the controversial striker was substituted before the hour mark – much to his chagrin.

Returning to the changing rooms at Anfield after the final whistle, Diego Costa jokingly coughed in the direction of waiting journalists.

Amid the current coronavirus outbreak, this was not received well.

Atlético Madrid told CNN that Costa has since “repented”:

Obviously Diego’s actions were unfortunate and the club condemns his action.

It’s a pity that some people find it difficult to understand the significance of this crisis.

The player has repented and apologised when he realised his mistake.
