Fans of River Plate taunted Boca Juniors supporters by floating a giant inflatable pig wearing Boca colours over the away end during last weekend’s Argentine Primera División 2-2 draw with their rivals.

Hosts River Plate were 1-0 up when their fans chose to unleash the giant inflatable pig in the 18th minute of the derby match at Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti in Buenos Aires. The game was then temporarily delayed while the farmyard animal was dealt with.

River fans’ derisory nickname for Boca is los chanchitos, meaning the little pigs, apparently in reference to the smell of the working-class neighbourhood Boca Juniors is situated in.

In return, Boca fans refer to River Plate as los gallinas, which means the chickens and suggests a lack of courage. Maybe we’ll see one of those next time…
