Embattled Manager of the Week: Alan Pardew, Newcastle United

Alan Pardew of Newcastle United
Pardew… Embattled (Img: Parka81)

Newcastle United’s dismal 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion was their 11th in 14 games, something of a slump you might agree for Alan Pardew’s previously high-flying Magpies. Football Burp mosied on down to online Toon Amry presences Newcastle Online, Talk of the Tyne and Toon Forum to see what the St James’s Park faithful had to say about the reigning LMA Manager of the Year…

Stands accused of…

AlanSkärare, Newcastle Online

Tipping point.

Get him out of my club.

Rexn, Talk of the Tyne…

I make it 2 home wins (against 2 of the bottom 3) in all competitions in the last 16 games. There have been no away wins in over 7 months.

The only question is timing. Is he to be given a chance against the only 2 teams below us that we have yet to play at home? For the record, they are Reading on 19th Jan and Southampton on 23rd Feb but at this rate, Southampton will be above us by then.

You Can Call Me Yo, Toon Forum…

Every loss brings everybody closer to wanting him gone. An eight year contract has made us a laughing stock.

The games that piss me off the most are West Ham and Swansea. We had good teams against both. I think looking back, these two games showed that Pardew is losing it.

Jordan_NUFC, Newcastle Online…

11 losses in 6 weeks. How many other managers would still have their jobs after that?

I’m now 100% certain that if Alan Pardew is still in charge of this football club at the end of the season we’ll be playing championship football next season.

Paul Kannell, Talk of the Tyne…

He’s lost the dressing room I’m afraid, full strength or not we’re fucked, best we’ll do is narrowly avoid relegation followed by a mass exodus in the summer.

Hoof ball, Toon Forum…

I’ve stuck by Pardew all season, I agreed with the majority that once results started going really badly a few months ago that we should stick with him. I’ve watched almost all of our games all season, but the time has come where I now think he has to go. Other than Bordeaux at home we’ve been awful all season. Take away the very very lucky win against WBA at home and we’d be in the bottom 3 in the league, and deservedly so, we’re out both cups, and we’re most importantly we’re getting worse. My concern is that there is just no plan. No ethos, no tactics, and the players have quite clearly lost faith. Whilst I don’t like sacking managers, and I don’t think Pardew is a terrible manager (I don’t think he’s a good one either), I do now think that the only thing that can keep us up is going to be ‘new manager syndrome’ and to me the questions are now who and when rather than if. Anyone else beginning to feel the same

Revolution, Newcastle Online…

He has no clue, completely lost on that touchline. We need a manager capable of managing a Premier League club.

Watching us bring the keeper up past the half way line to float the dead balls into Shola absolutely killed me.

The Owl, Talk of the Tyne…

He has fielded his best team minus 1 or 2 in quite a few matches and we have lost, West Ham, Swansea etc.
We lost a quality player in Ba who rarely missed a game and we are left with a bunch of hapless sicknotes.
What Manager who has a successful goalscoring out and out centre forward brings in another striker who canot play with him and then banishes him to the wing. Gross mismanagement.

Chappaz, Toon Forum…

Today injuries weren’t an excuse. There was no fight or desire. The players seemed to have the same attitude our players had when we got relegated. Just feeling sorry for themselves.

Unfortunately, this is all Pardew’s responsibility. If he can’t get the players to want to fight and work hard for the manager then you have to consider him going.

11 losses in 14 games though, that’s one of the worst runs of form in all four football tiers and managers have been sacked for FAR less.

Geordie Ace, Newcastle Online…

Does his 8 year contract have performance related clauses in it? Time for him to go in my opinion. The bloke just isnt a winner. Far too many excuses and inept decisions on his behalf. No game plan, no f***er has a clue what their role within the team is and he has no idea how to change it. He stumbled across a winning formula last season and this season we have been found out. I’m very surprised the crowd hasn’t turned yet like.

Rexn, Talk of the Tyne…

Pardew is a mass of contradictions at the moment. He is a walking case study for psychological disorders associated with being out of his depth. For example, we are much better off than when we sold Carroll but do not have strength in depth.

I stress I do not hate the guy but he is not up to the job. The reasons for fall outs with previous teams are becoming more and more obvious and puts into context the reason that he refused to play Ben Arfa for so long, why he benched Tevez and Mascherano, why he got rid of Barton and Nolan and much more besides.

Having argued for continuity, it is now becoming clear that the kindest thing to do to Pardew would be to put him out of his misery and let someone who has half a clue taking over.

Platinii, Talk of the Tyne…

That team selection was some sort of cry for help.

Colos Curls, Newcastle Online…

Quite unforgivable that. Just feel totally deflated as a fan of nufc, as if the rest of the country needs an excuse to ridicule us nevermind pardew seemingly pulling us through.

I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but today just made me angry/depressed/deflated all in one in a big f*** off dosage. Please leave pards

Mistle17, Newcastle Online…

I don’t see how this is any better than the Souness days.

Paul Kannell, Talk of the Tyne…

The players coming in there today should be running through brick walls to try and prove to the manager they’re worth a place, some of them plainly aren’t good enough, the others simply have no respect for the well below standard manager and coaching staff, the whole club’s a shambles from top to bottom. What a time to be laying off the drink.

Felipao91, Newcastle Online…

Another evidence of the reason we finished 5th last season was because of our players not because of this man. He is clueless, he puts his team out wrong and does everything wrong.

Dontooner, Newcastle Online…

Can we seriously consider sacking this fraud…it is painted in the skies how his teams do in his second season

I Bleed Black & White, Toon Forum…

We’ve been found out and Pardew has no Plan B.

We have a lot of injuries now but we’ve had moments when we’ve only had 2 or 3 out and been no better.

We’re f****** s*** and we’re a laughing stock, AGAIN! I wouldn’t be upset if he got the boot!

Sssssshhhhhh! - Alan Pardew, Newcastle United
Pardew… Humble (Img: Parka81)

steve_69, Newcastle Online…

Time to go. It’s not just the results, it’s the fact that we don’t even look capable of winning a game.
We’ve had bad luck with injuries this season, granted, but even before the players got injured we looked a f***ing shambles.
Enough is enough!

TCD23, Newcastle Online…

What is he writing on that bloody notepad? Bullshit to praise Shola on post-match?

“Well he provided an aerial threat, he’s a triffic player that Shola. Core to the team”

Heaton Mag, Toon Forum…

Was there anyone here who didn’t want to see Campbell given some pitch time today? Even Ranger put himself about a bit. But no, we stick with Shola, because Pardew sees something in him we haven’t seen for 11+ years

toontownman, Newcastle Online…

Has lost any clue of how to set a team up to attack. Successfully putting a wet blanket on any creativity since 2010. Was acceptable while we could defend ad had someone upfront that could make something for himself. Properly up shot creek now.

Rza, Talk of the Tyne…

Oh how I would pay good money to see that holy grail that is Pardew’s notebook. I suspect one would have quite a laugh at it. Portrays himself as honest, let’s see if he does the honourable thing and resigns. I’m not holding my breath, as we all know if he wasn’t here he’d be signing on the dole. Funnily enough I can’t remember us being this bad since Souness, and that includes the year we went down. We were better that year. The only thing which could save us and Pardew his job, is 3 teams being worse than us this season.

I would take Pardew’s sacking over any signing this January

Wullie, Newcastle Online…

Has NUFC ever gone a full season without an away win in any competition?

I’ll be staggered if we win one this season, the opposition would have to be absolutely shamefully bad for us to have any hope.

Considerably worse manager than any of Souness, Roeder, Kinnear or Fat Sam. None of them ever put out something so consistently awful as this.

Dave, Newcastle Online…

Thing is, even if you believe his stated intention to play passing football and bring in players to fit an attacking, slick philosophy, he clearly doesn’t trust anyone beyond his absolute first choice XI to be able to do anything of the sort. But instead of drilling the philosophy into them and trying to breed a style of play throughout the whole club, he just sends the other players out to hoof the ball as far away from the goal at all times. Irrespective of the quality of players at his disposal, there should be a noticeable theme running through the play, and there’s nothing of this at all. If his best players aren’t available, it’s long ball s*** all match.

Setting aside everything about his ability, him going straight down the tunnel after that and with that support there actually sickens me. Disgusting stuff, didn’t think he was capable of that.

Ramone, Toon Forum…

At the time I was gutted we sacked Hughton but it was the right thing to do. He gave us team spirit and belief but I don’t think we ever would have got into Europe with him. I think Pardew has ran his course as well. He had a one off good season, carried by momentum and some amazing Carr gems. However I don’t think he can get us out of this rut, he looks completely devoid of ideas when we go behind and seems to have lost the dressing room.

mrmojorisin, Newcastle Online…

you have to ask when do the excuses stop for this f***er like? ok we can write off today ’cause he decided to play a weak team and concentrate on the league

we’ve written off the first part of the season ’cause he wasn’t backed with a CB & RB in the summer

what about when norwich f*** us off the pitch in the next game and hoofball doesn’t break reading down, what then? is it ALL williamson’s fault then, all of it?

Wullie, Newcastle Online…

Chance of getting anything at Norwich are nil.

I’d love to see Hughton be the one to strike the final blow, that would be fantastic karma after what this f***ing snake did to steal a man’s job.

claud_ballz, Talk of the Tyne…

If it meant that Ashley didnt get the extra TV money and fucked off back to where he came from i`d happily accept relegation and a new start, the club feels like what happened to wimbledon when they moved to MK i feel like the **** has stole the heart and soul out of the city and isnt happy with that he wants to rub our noses in it until he sees fit, watching that parcel today made me feel very embarrased to be associated to NUFC. I used to be scathing towards the people who paid £600 up front to him but now i feel deep sorrow as i know plenty of people who cant really afford it but do it through sheer love of the club, **** me i was the same when my kids were little and i couldnt really afford the season ticket money every june but i just had to get it no matter what, its been three seasons since i broke that habit and i still get twinges on a sat afternoon knowing my pals are on the hoy and going to the match but today has strengthened my resolve to never go back aslong as pardew, ashley & lamearse darken the once great corridors of St James park.

Today i am as low as ive ever been as a newcastle utd supporter & proud Geordie i just wish this nightmare would end and i could wake up and realise the last 5 yrs have all been a bad dream.

In his defence…

ExiledGeordie, Newcastle Online…

What were people honestly expecting with this side out?

I’m judging him after the next 3 league games when he’s got a proper side out. If it’s the same old s*** after those games and we’re still in the mire then yes I’ll probably be in the “”he’s lost it completely” camp

skalpel, Toon Forum…

I don’t see us going down at this stage really, especially not when we actually get our first team back from injury. The biggest problem with sacking Pardew is that there is nobody who can or would take his place, we’d end up with Mark Hughes or some idiot.

hindu times, Newcastle Online…

As much as this whole display has been woeful, as has most of the season, getting rid of him now (in the middle of transfer season) would be absolutely the wrong decision. We need players. The last thing we want is for the owner to have the perfect excuse not to buy at LEAST 1 more player.

That being said, he has exactly the next 3 PL games to turn this around or I’m officially joining the Pardew out club (as much as I don’t want to).

Fonzbertan, Toon Forum…

For me, I’m inclined to give Pards until the end of January. We’ll have all the players back then we had for most of last year, plus Saylor, Anita and Debuchy. Then we’ll see if it’s tactics or personnel that are lacking. If we get less than 7 points from Norwich, Reading and Villa I think a lot of people will start turning against him.

The Dream Boat, Toon Forum…

Shows how little you know. We had 2 possibly 3-4 actual premier league quality players on the pitch today the rest have barely made a start in the PL never mind actually being up to the standard. Also although motivating players is his job the players are people and perfectly capable of motivating themselves they aren’t robots who have to be programmed. Half the team gave up after the first goal Anita, Bigi and Elliott all tried, why if they’re motivated can’t the rest of the team be?

Aldridge Prior, Toon Forum…

Sorry but Ashley has to step in here and spend another £20 million if he takes himself remotely seriously. Pardew isn’t the best but he can’t be blamed for this. He doesn’t hold the purse strings and can’t just go out and choose players for fat Mike to buy.

I’m pretty certain he’d have loved to replace Willo and Simmo ages ago and get another backup full back and striker but Mike Ashley is gambling our future away like it’s one of his little toys.

If you blame Pardew for playing Shola and Sammy then look at the alternatives. We play Marveaux and Cisse for example, what if they get injured? We’d be double fucked.

Ashley has to stop f****** around here. The club is on the verge of breaking even but will lose out massively if we get relegated, a lot more than the £20mil or so he needs to spend to sort this mess out.

Mifune, Toon Forum…

I would be horrified if we sacked Pards. I am certain that we would be more likely to be relegated if we sacked Pardew than not sacking him. Still 100% convinced he is the manager for us and all we need to do is stick by him and keep backing him, the players, and the club. And to be honest if Ashley did sack Pards then I would want Ashley out of the club as well because he would then clearly not have the balls to see through his plan of how to bring success to this club – which I think is the right plan.
