Twitter sensation and occasional Newcastle United footballer Joey Barton has once again managed to whip up a storm of controversy on the eminent social networking site, this time admonishing the nation’s football journalists for being “frightful bores”.

Barton, who served a seventy-four-day jail sentence for attacking a YTS player with Ousmane Dabo’s detached, bloodied head, had initially Tweeted in response to a perceived slur on his character by David Pleat, the seventeen-time former Tottenham Hotspur manager having very publically suggested that the controversial Magpies midfielder might not be the best person in the world at absolutely everything.

By issuing a retort implying Pleat to be a Curb Crawler – which, according to Burp sources, is when one drives very slowly in the hope of a cheerful encounter with former Charlton Athletic and West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley – Barton incurred the wrath of Daily Mirror scribe Oliver Holt and Daily Mail talisman Des Kelly, leading to a three-way Twitter spat which is already being hailed as “the most tedious so far this week”.

Guillaume Tilley-Mercer, a Twitter follower of Barton’s from Great Yarmouth, told Football Burp: “Holt had already tried to get a rise out of every football personality on Twitter, with the sole exception of Joey Barton, at one point or another.

“So, from a perfectionist’s point of view, I can see why he chose to try and get a rise out of Joey Barton on Twitter. Unfortunately for him, Barton was in a particularly foul mood after accidentally stepping on his copy of The Queen is Dead while trying to mount a framed action shot from Pierrot le Fou on his bedroom wall.

“He often gets quite irritable when he’s been at the sherry. The things he wrote, I don’t think they’d be suitable for print.”
