Even football fundraisers can descend into ugly scenes, as shown by the following videos of charity match bust-ups.
From physical fights to over-zealous tackles, tempers can flare in what are supposed to be non-competitive fixtures.
Some people can’t play nice, even for a good cause – and it’s they who are the suspect stars of our charity match bust-ups round-up:
Diego Maradona v Juan Sebastián Verón
The Argentina legends looked close to blows at the Pope’s recent Partido por la Paz (Match for Peace), ironically enough.
Verón’s innocuous-looking trip seemed at first to amuse Maradona, before he became angrier on their way off the pitch.
The 1986 World Cup winner then had to be restrained while ranting and raving on the sidelines, but neither would reveal afterwards what was said:
Edgar Davids v Jonathan Wilkes
At Soccer Aid 2014, the former Holland midfielder went in hard on the singer/presenter/Robbie Williams ally:
Wilkes then threw Davids’s shin pad away after he’d lost it in another meaty challenge, this time involving Ben Shephard and John Bishop:
Still clutching his shin pad, Davids decided to taunt Wilkes with his silky skills:
One hopes they hugged it all out afterwards.
José Mourinho v Olly Murs
Also at Soccer Aid 2014, Mourinho was perhaps trying to alleviate the Davids v Wilkes sourness when he ran onto the pitch and scythed down a flying Murs:
If however Mourinho was merely expressing distaste for Murs’s music then we can only applaud him.
Gabriel Agbonlahor v Louis Tomlinson
The Aston Villa forward made himself Public Enemy No.1 amongst One Direction fans when he clattered into Tomlinson during a charity match for Stiliyan Petrov:
So shaken was the 1D singer that he was substituted, upon which he trudged to the side of the pitch and vomited:
Agbonlahor reportedly received death threats, while Tomlinson was still complaining of a bad knee a year after the incident.
Boris Johnson v Maurizio Gaudino
Now foreign secretary, Bojo wasn’t quite so diplomatic when he launched into a bizarre rugby tackle on the former Man City midfielder during an England XI v Germany XI match:
Alastair Campbell v Tom Parker
During a Soccer Six match at Burnley’s Turf Moor, former Labour spin doctor Campbell clashed with Tom from The Wanted.
There’s no footage of the incident itself, but here’s Campbell to explain what happened:
