The Liverpool goalkeeper’s bizarre retention of the ball was over three times as long as the 6 seconds permitted, so he was penalised by the award of a free kick to Bordeaux inside his penalty area.
Henri Saivet then compounded the Belgian’s embarrassment by firing home the resulting free kick in style.
