Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia next summer after losing a play-off 0-1 over two legs against Sweden.
A goalless draw at the San Siro stadium in Milan meant the country will not appear in the finals of the competition for the first time since 1958.
Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon tearfully announced his retirement from international football shortly after the final whistle, saying he was “sorry for all of Italian football”.
