Croatia beat Russia on penalties in a World Cup quarter-final clash in Sochi on Saturday night as Ivan Rakitić scored a decisive spot kick for the second game running.
Denis Cheryshev put the hosts ahead after 31 minutes with his fourth goal of the tournament before Andrej Kramarić equalised ahead of half-time at the Fisht Olympic Stadium.
Russia then looked to be heading out of the tournament when Domagoj Vida put Croatia in front in extra time but a very late Mário Fernandes header gave them hope and took the game to penalties.
But it wasn’t to be for the hosts, who exit their own World Cup at the respectable quarter-final stage and here are the best of the jokes and tweets:
