Should have checked the depth.

This Sunderland fan cut his head diving into the fountain at Trafalgar Square before Sunday’s League One play-off final against Charlton Athletic.

After stripping to his underwear, almost indecently exposing himself in the process, he goes over to the edge of the fountain and prepares to dive in.

No sense no feeling

He would have done well to check the depth of the water first, because he cracks his head on the stone base and emerges bloodied and dazed.

There are gasps and winces from onlookers when it becomes apparent how badly their fellow supporter has misjudged the situation.

To make matters worse for him, Sunderland fell to a 2-1 defeat at Wembley having been gifted an early lead through a freak own-goal.

They succumbed to a last-gasp Charlton winner as Lee Bowyer’s Addicks secured promotion to the Championship.
