Chelsea’s Fernando Torres and Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen continued a personal battle throughout the Premier League clash at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The Spanish striker came off worse and was sent off after receiving 2 yellow cards awarded for fouls on the Spurs defender.

The first card came when Torres appeared to claw at Vertonghen’s face after bringing him down, while the second was perhaps slightly softer, handed out following a mid-air collision between the 2 players.

The real action was seen after the match though, on BBC Sport’s Final Score programme.

Appearing as a guest pundit, Fowler controversially compared the pair of fighting footballers to a “couple of girls”.

Speaking about the game, he said:

Torres and Vertonghen were at each others throats all game.

Y’know like a couple of girls actually.

Y’know like pulling each others shirts, pushing each other.

But Fowler was later forced to apologise for the comment and made this apology:

Yeah, see I made a comment obviously about women’s football…

Look, I do apologise.

I’m a big, big fan of Liverpool… Liverpool Ladies actually, who have got a chance of winning the league tomorrow. So I’ll be watching.

Obviously anyone at home who was offended, I am deeply sorry.

So I hope that’s the end of that.
