A possum nicknamed El Jarochito invaded the pitch during Saturday’s fixture between Veracruz and Puebla in Mexico’s Liga MX.

The animal was given the moniker by commentators and, in a damning indictment on the game itself, was even named man of the match.

El Jarochito appeared to have suffered an injury to his right paw and was handed over to a local environmental protection committee for treatment.

Veracruz announced on Twitter that he would be released back into the wild once nursed back to health.

Lucas Cavallini’s first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win for visitors Puebla, with Rodrigo López seeing red for the home side in the second period.

But it was the possum who stole the show, his cameo even moving Bayern Munich to confirm their interest in signing him:
