Port Vale’s Luke Hannant drank from a bottle of Carling thrown at him by Stoke City fans who had come to support the Under-21 side face their rivals in the EFL Trophy.

Trouble flared as the clubs were drawn together for a rare Potteries derby in the second round of the Football League tournament on Tuesday night.

Images soon surfaced of the damage visiting supporters had done to the facilities at Vale Park and there were reports of 11 arrests.

Several missiles were thrown onto the pitch after a Cristian Montaño goal in a 4-0 win for the hosts over their youthful opponents.

25-year-old midfielder Hannant picked up what is said to be a beer and drank from it before throwing the bottle away.
