VIDEO: Palmeiras mistakenly celebrate title win after fan relays wrong info

Stadium erupts after erroneous goal alert.

Palmeiras players and staff celebrated winning the title after one supporter mistakenly relayed information that Grêmio had equalised at Flamengo.

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side were in action against América Mineiro, a game they won 4-0, when news filtered through that their title rivals had been pegged back.

Flamengo failing to win would have crowned Palmeiras as champions of Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, but they were 1-0 up going into stoppage time.

As we see in this clip, one fan gets word from another that there’s been another goal – but somewhere along the line there has been some confusion.

What really happened is that Flamengo doubled their lead, whereas the fan in this video says “gol do Grêmio?” before leaping about in celebration.

This sparks a chain reaction of joyous scenes across the Allianz Parque stadium, with even staff and players jumping up and down and hugging each other on the touchline.

On his way off the pitch, we see Scolari getting confirmation from someone in the stands that Grêmio had not in fact equalised, and Palmeiras must wait to clinch the title.

With a five point cushion over Flamengo and just two matches each left to play, it’s likely that Palmeiras will get there in the end.
