An amateur match in South Africa had to be halted when a dust devil whirled its way across the pitch, eliciting laughter from those filming it.

Despite their ominous appearance, dust devils are usually harmless – but a moving column of dust and debris is nevertheless inconvenient to a football match.

Some Twitter users believed there to be something more sinister at play than mere nature:

We witness a lot of things in Rural areas, even the weather changes when some teams enter the field and suddenly goes back to normal after the game. When we tell people about these things they don’t believe us! 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️
