VIDEO: Australia women’s player floored by “vicious clearance”

Elicits "audible gasp" from crowd.

Australia Women player Ellie Carpenter was flattened by what the commentator described as a “vicious clearance” during a 1-1 draw with USA.

The 18-year-old was chasing down opponent Crystal Dunn, who inadvertently punted the ball straight into Carpenter’s face.

According to the commentator, the ferocity of the hit elicited an “audible gasp” from the crowd.

After a worrying few seconds of lying motionless on the floor, a physio tended to her bloody nose and she recovered to play the whole game.

The Matildas came within a whisker of beating the world number 1 ranked side in the 2018 Tournament of Nations, only to concede a late leveller.
