Watch as VAR is unable to disallow a clearly offside Aves goal due to a Boavista fan waving his flag in front of the camera at the crucial moment.
The Portuguese Primeira Liga match descended into farce when Aves midfielder Vítor Gomes volleyed home from close range after a corner kick was headed onto him.
Gomes appeared to be in an offside position when he scored, so the goal was referred to the video assistant referee – and that’s when the bizarre technical hitch became apparent.
Just as the ball makes its way to Gomes, a Boavista supporter decides to wave a huge flag bearing the club crest, completely obscuring the camera’s view.
As such, the match day officials were unable to disallow the goal – although with seventy minutes on the clock and Aves already leading 2-0, it wasn’t as decisive a moment as it could have been.
Suffice it to say, the moment has instantly turned into a meme for social media wags:
