After being pictured smoking outside a London nightclub on Wednesday, the Arsenal fans were in fine voice at The Hawthorns this weekend to support their player with a new Jack Wilshere smoking song.

Wilshere angered club chiefs after the shocking photo emerged on Friday, but has used his Twitter account to deny being a smoker.

In response to the furore, the Gunners midfielder compared himself to Zinedine Zidane, who was also once photographed puffing on a cigarette:

The 21-year old England international then sought to clarify the situation and set the record straight:

But for the record….I don't smoke!

… but generally appeared to be approaching the recent events with good humour:

So… Now that all the smoke has blown over, let's all focus on the game tomorrow! Need a win before the international break! #Gooners

Arsène Wenger took a slightly dimmer view of the smoking revelation though, telling the gathered press “I disagree completely with that behaviour”:

After scoring a 63rd minute equaliser for Arsenal against West Brom on Sunday, Wilshere will have gone some way towards healing the wounds caused by the controversy of the past few days.

The travelling fans even created a new Wilshere smoking song for the player:

He smokes when he wants,
He smokes when he wants,
Jack Wilshere,
He smokes when he wants.

Jack loved it and called the fans “incredible”:

Love the new song for me today! Haha fans were incredible again! Good point nice to get a goal hopefully a few more to come! #Gooners
