See the FC Basel v Schalke 04 Greenpeace protesters who abseiled down from the stadium roof and revealed a huge banner during the Champions League clash.
Last night’s European tie between the 2 sides was briefly interrupted when several daredevil but eco-friendly Greenpeace protesters stopped play.
In this clip you can see four abseiling activists appear on the stadium roof above one of the stands at Basel’s St. Jakob-Park, locally known as Joggeli, in Switzerland.
Aimed at Russian natural gas exploration company Gazprom, a huge 28 metre-wide banner was unfurled at the 33,433-seater stadium.
The banner read:
DON’T FOUL THE ARCTIC
… accompanied by the hashtag:
#FreeTheArctic30
… in reference to the 30 fellow environmental activists who were detained in Russia after their ship, the Arctic Sunrise, was seized last month following a protest against drilling in the area.
Gazprom are an official partner of the Champions League as well as being Schalke’s shirt sponsor.
