Despite further protests from Steven Naismith and Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian international insisted on taking the 44th minute penalty instead of the team’s spot kick specialist but only succeeded in dragging his shot wide of the post.

Mirallas was substituted at half-time, shortly after the incident, although manager Roberto Martínez claims this was due to a hamstring injury and not the administration of a swift punishment.

The game finished 0-0 and Everton were left to rue the missed opportunity while the player was accused of selfishness and a lack of team spirit.
