Tottenham lost 0-1 to Ajax in a Champions League semi-final first leg at their new ground in north London on Tuesday night.

Fans were left disappointed after the injury-hit hosts were unable to respond to an intensive start from the Dutch team, who went in front courtesy of an early Donny van de Beek goal.

There was also a nasty-looking incident involving Jan Vertonghen when the defender appeared to faint despite having been cleared to carry on by the medical staff following a collision.

Although Pochettino’s side will still hope to respond in the return tie, these were the best tweets and jokes as Spurs are beaten 0-1 by Ajax at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final:

There's being optimistic, and then there's the Spurs medical team looking at Jan Vertonghen and thinking "ah, he can run that off".

Normally, a demoralising defeat in the Champions League can have a bad knock-on affect on a team's league form.

Thankfully, though, Spurs don't have any league form, so it's all good.

Spurs are at that stage where they need Melisandre to start lighting things up
