Now, as promised, those defenders…
Aleksandar Kolarov, Man City – £5.5m
Ended last season as City’s first-choice left-back and has plenty of potential for goals and assists.
Héctor Bellerín, Arsenal – £5.5m
See above, but substitute ‘City’ for ‘Arsenal’ and ‘left-back’ for ‘right-back’.
Eric Dier, Spurs – £5m
Again, ditto with the goals and assists potential, but ‘Spurs’ and ‘right-back’, although it does of course depend whether the youngster starts as first-choice.
Ryan Shawcross, Stoke – £5m
The Potters have strung together back-to-back top half finishes going into what looks to be a favourable start to this season, including an opening day game at home to Liverpool (think back to the final day of last season).
Ashley Williams, Swansea – £5m
The very definition of stoic.
Craig Dawson, West Brom – £5m
Pulis Factor + goal threat at set pieces = canny purchase. See also his team mates Joleon Lescott and Gareth McAuley.
Wes Morgan, Leicester – £4.5m
Ended last season on fire, not literally of course.
John O’Shea, Sunderland – £4.5m
Dick Advocaat will have them well drilled, won’t he? That’ll be cheap if so.
Luke Garbutt, Everton – £4.5m
Takes a wicked set piece but has Leighton Baines to oust. Keep an eye on his progress.
Sébastien Bassong, Norwich – £4.5m
Used to get the odd goal, didn’t he? And Norwich were hard to beat at Carrow Road last time they were up.
