Native Brazilian fans watching United States Women face New Zealand in the first game of their Olympic campaign shouted “Zika” in unison at Hope Solo after the goalkeeper made a fuss about the virus on social media prior to her arrival at the games.

Chants of “Ooooohhhhh… Zika!” reverberated around the stadium each time she took a goal kick during the Group G clash yesterday.

The player at one stage threatened to pull out of the squad over concerns regarding the Zika virus and has been posting photos of the enormous collection of preventative measures accompanying her on this trip:
