The Southampton match programme from yesterday’s 0-2 defeat to Liverpool has hit back in astonishing fashion at claims from Brendan Rodgers that it was “a load of arl shite”.

Reds boss Rodgers had expressed his outrage at the programme’s controversial decision not to lead with a front cover depicting Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren as golden gods surveying the kingdom of their creation.

It was Rodgers’s firm belief that the returning trio should also have had a mosaic of their visages mowed onto the St Mary’s pitch somehow, not to mention a special “poetry corner” where Saints fans could read out literary tributes to their erstwhile heroes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Burp, yesterday’s Southampton match programme indicated that Rodgers could go suck a lemon while boiling his distinctively shark-like head.

It flipped open to a page that read: “Why should I give two hoots what this pound shop Mourinho thinks I should have published in anticipation of yesterday’s game?

“Maybe if Liverpool hadn’t signed my editorial team in the summer I’d have had a bit of help, but as it is I think I’ve done pretty bloody marvellously to achieve sentience and compile myself.

“Not many match programmes can do that, you know.”
