Andros Townsend has dedicated his screamer in last night’s 1-1 friendly draw in Italy to outgoing ITV co-commentator Andy Townsend.
The terrestrial TV channel, much-maligned, recently announced they would not be renewing the lucrative contract of the man who brought us such memorable catchphrases as “in and around the box”, “for me, Clive” and “better”.
It’s a move that’s been met with widespread dismay, with many viewers left wondering how they’ll be able to tell which kinds of shots from what kinds of distances might or might not trouble a ‘keeper of that quality without Townsend senior’s expert analysis.
Following last night’s stunning late equaliser in Turin, Townsend junior told Football Burp that he would like to dedicate the strike to a man that many have speculated to be his father.
He said: “When I collected the ball, the nebulous apparition of Andy Townsend’s face appeared over my shoulder and said ‘you’ve got to hit the target from here, Andros, make the ‘keeper work.
“I thought, you know what, he’s right – we had been lacking that little bit of quality in the final third, and yes, you do have to take your chances at this level.
“You know, ground level.”
He added: “Long story short, I just twatted it.”
