Zinedine Zidane has resigned as manager of Real Madrid just days after guiding them to a third consecutive Champions League trophy.
Also a legendary player at the Bernabéu, the Frenchman took everyone by surprise in choosing to bow out on a high rather than lead them into the 2018-19 season.
Among those who’ve been linked with the job include Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, and Arsène Wenger, who only recently brought to an end his 22-year reign as Arsenal manager.
There may be sadness at Zidane’s shock resignation, but there have also been plenty of jokes:

Great timing from Real Madrid to part ways with Zidane just as Sam Allardyce becomes available. Can just see him lay topless on a deckchair in the technical area, chugging back tins of Stella and throwing steak bakes at Sergio Ramos whilst calling him a foreign fucking fairy.

I need someone to create an app called Zidane. It lets you know when the right time is to leave a party.

Pep left when the ovation was loud. Zidane to leave after leading Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League triumph. Some other coaches who I cannot mention for legal reasons did a Mugabe. Lmao.

Zinedine Zidane has left Real Madrid. Presumably in frustration at being unable to land Charly Musonda.

I don’t find the Zidane news surprising…
In 2006 I also quit my job right before the World Cup. No way could I keep a 9-5 when there are 3 games a day for 2 weeks. #Priorities #Zidane
