Manchester City were helped to a 6-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk by a penalty awarded after Raheem Sterling appeared to fall over himself with a defender in relatively close proximity.
The controversial decision came midway through the first-half of a Champions League group stage clash between the two sides at the Etihad on Wednesday night.
It’s been debated online, with some suggesting the player should have owned up after realising there was no contact between him and Mykola Matviyenko.
Following the final whistle, Sterling apologised:
I went to chip the ball and I don’t know what happened next.
I ended up on the floor and turned around. I don’t think I felt contact, it was just my bad.
I hit the floor and scuffed the floor. Apologies to the ref and apologies to Shakhtar.
