To celebrate the impending release of We Are The Ocean’s new album Ark, we spoke to bassist Jack Spence about his beloved Tottenham Hotspur…
How did you come to support Spurs?
My dad grew up in Tottenham, and all my mum’s family are avid Spurs fans too, so it was pretty much to fall into/have thrust upon me.
What are your expectations for the rest of the season? What are your thoughts on the season so far?
Sorry to say I think Spurs will miss the coveted Champions League spots, the optimist in me says we’ll end up 5th but in reality probably 6th. I think there’s been a lot of pros to the season, namely with the amount of youngsters coming through, and for Pochettino’s first season it’s a good starting point.
Do you think the manager is doing a good job? If not, who would you like to see replace him?
There are definitely areas that could improve but overall I think he’s doing a good job. I think he’s just established his definite starting eleven, and it’s important he sticks with them instead of chopping and changing too often.
Which areas of the team/squad would you like to see strengthened?
I think our key weak spot is on the wing, Chadli has (for me) concreted his position on one side, but Townsend and Lamela are still falling a bit short. Beyond that I think we just need to strengthen tactically and as a unit, rather than in a specific position.
Have you managed to get to the ground much to watch them over the years?
White Hart Lane is a relatively small stadium for the size of the Spurs fan base, so I’ve only been able to make cup games recently. I’m hoping with the new stadium I’ll be able to hit up some league games.
Would you be able to name the first, best and worst games you’ve ever been to?
I’ve been something of a talisman and never seen Spurs lose when I’ve been at the ground, so they’ve all been pretty great experiences. However my dad recently attended the 5-3 whitewash (yeah, I said it) over Chelsea, I can’t say I’ve been to a game that would trump that.
Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the players you’ve seen play for your team in your time as a fan, who would you pick?
David Ginola, Jurgen Klinsmen, Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart, Ledley King.
We Are the Ocean’s new album Ark is released on 11th May on BMG Chrysalis
