Talking Spurs with… Blair Dunlop

The singer/songwriter/actor discusses his beloved Tottenham Hotspur.

Blair Dunlop’s new album House of Jacks includes “The Ballad of Enzo Laviano”, a folkily majestic ballad which channels the anxiety of an imaged transfer window target, so we caught up with him for a natter about his beloved Tottenham Hotspur…

Are you happy with Mauricio Pochettino as new manager? If not, who would you like to have seen?

I’m really pleased with Pochettino, maybe for the wrong reasons… Obviously he got Southampton pressing hard and playing some great football, but I’m mainly excited because the Argentine link could see us get the best out of Lamela next year.

Do you think Sherwood was harshly treated? And AVB and Redknapp before him, for that matter?

I think it’s no secret that Levy is trigger happy, but all of the above had fundamental flaws either with their character or reign as boss. Redknapp maybe has the greatest cause to feel aggrieved, but he also got to work with Modric, Van Der Vaart and Bale. 4th was about par for the course!

Which areas of the squad would you like to see strengthened? Any players in particular that you have your eye on?

Left-back and centre-back. Would love to see Coentrão in a Spurs shirt but he may want more Champions League football, and now the AVB-Portugal link is gone, it seems more far fetched than last summer. Centre-back is tricky, Chiriches is skilled but headless and Kaboul is class but never fit. Let’s see if Vertonghen fancies it come August and reassess. Maybe it’s boring and functional but Lescott on a free is a no-brainer.

Will you be supporting England at the World Cup? How far do you think they can go?

We CAN win it, so can Honduras but they won’t, neither will we… I’d be happy to see some good football and maybe quarters? Give the youngsters a few minutes and I’ll be happy haha. When England go out I normally get behind Italy but obviously we’re in the same group this time so I’ll be suppressing my feelings there!

Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the Spurs players you’ve ever seen, who would you pick?

Has to be based on skill really doesn’t it… Ok: Lloris, King, Modric, Ginola, Berbatov. I honestly think Bale misses out there, just can’t picture him being as good as those guys indoors! Actually, it depends on the size of the pitch, maybe he sneaks in ahead of Ginola. Which would be a shame because his flowing locks would be sorely missed.
