Talking Manchester United with… Blitz Kids

We talk to Blitz Kids front man Joe James about his beloved Manchester United.

Blitz Kids
Blitz Kids… Pining for Kagawa

Having recently released their new single “Run for Cover”, Blitz Kids are currently in the midst of an extensive UK tour – as such, we thought it’d be a good time to collar front man Joe James for a quick natter about his beloved Manchester United…

On your band’s Facebook page, you cite Eric Cantona as your sole influence…

Eric Cantona is our inspiration, and an inspiration to all. What a gentleman. What a chap!

What do you make of all the transfer shenanigans, the last-minute signing of Marouane Fellaini and all that?

I think it’s ridiculous, and I think it’s a shame about Nick Powell being loaned out to Wigan. I can understand why Moyes has loaned him out but I’m a bit annoyed he hasn’t been given a chance in the Premiership, because he’s a phenomenal player – I think he’s got as much natural talent as Rooney did when he started at United.

Fellaini’s a good signing but there are a lot more people I think we could have got in his place had Sir Alex still been at the club. It sort of shows how much of an attraction it was having him as manager – I think that definitely had a role to play in making big signings like van Persie.

The fact that Moyes has only signed two people shows that players aren’t as interested in signing for United now. But we needed someone in midfield, so if we hadn’t have got Fellaini then we’d have been really in the bin.

For me and the rest of the band, though, the biggest thing is that Kagawa’s not being played. He was amazing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and he’s not being given a chance to play in the Premiership, which is kind of annoying.

That and I stuck him in my Fantasy team, so I’ve had no points for him in four weeks!

What are your minimum expectations for this season?

I dunno. I’m actually enjoying how competitive it is because last season was, not to sound smug, there wasn’t really any competition – there were just teams falling by the wayside left, right and centre with injuries and stuff.

Obviously we want to win it again, but it’s nice to see teams like Arsenal and Liverpool being more aggressive. I thought Jose Mourinho would come back and boss the league, but he plays in such a weird way that anything could happen.

I’d just really like to see us do well in the Champions League, because our performances in last season’s Champions League were disappointing.

If you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the United players you’ve seen in your time as a fan, who would you pick?

Barthez in goal because he’s basically an outfield player, and he’s small so he’d do well in those little goals. I would then put Scholes in the middle, no question. Beckham on the right, Giggs on the left, and Cantona up front.

Nobody would want to play that team!

Joe James, thank you.
