The Ramona Flowers recently released new single “Brighter” and are working on their debut album with Lamb producer Andy Barlow, so we caught up with their front man Steve Bird for a natter about his beloved Chelsea…

Did you see the Everton game on Saturday?

I didn’t get to see the whole game – we had a gig, so we were soundchecking when it was on – but I saw the highlights.

Thought we were quite unlucky – Everton played well but we missed quite a few good chances. We’re just missing a top striker, I think.

In that respect, are you annoyed not to see Romelu Lukaku and/or Daniel Sturridge in Chelsea’s squad this season?

Lukaku, I really can’t understand that. He did amazingly at West Brom last season, and I saw him in a few pre-season games on telly and thought he’d be good this season.

I thought they were going to let go of Ba and keep Lukaku, so I was disappointed.

Sturridge never really did it at Chelsea – he just used to frustrate me, to be honest.

Didn’t he get played out wide more often than not?

He did, but the few times he played through the middle…I dunno, maybe he didn’t get a fair chance, but I just thought he was too selfish on the ball.

He’s definitely proving everyone wrong at Liverpool.

It’s a weird one, because Manchester City also seemed happy enough to let him go, then he went on to have that great loan spell at Bolton.

Yeah, I don’t know what it is. It’s good to see him doing well though, seems like he’s settled now. Good luck to him.

What are your thoughts on the new signings so far?

Schürrle I’ve seen a couple of times now and he looks like a good player. We haven’t seen much of van Ginkel yet but he’s supposed to be a good young player.

As for Eto’o, I think he’ll score some goals but he’s probably a stopgap because Mourinho couldn’t get who he wanted to get, and I don’t think he’s very keen on Torres.

Who would you like to see Chelsea go and get?

I was really hoping they’d get Rooney, thought he’d be a really top player for us. It’s a shame it didn’t happen, don’t know what happened there.

Like Mourinho said, there were noises coming out that he wanted to join Chelsea. We wouldn’t go after a top player from a top club otherwise.

Lewandowski is a top player but he’d already said he wanted to go to Bayern Munich. There aren’t that many top, top strikers out there.

Do you manage to get to Stamford Bridge much?

Not so much these days, although I used to be a season ticket holder a couple of years ago.

I still try to get down six or seven times a season because my brother-in-law, uncle and that have all got season tickets.

I do miss going regularly because you see things differently than when you follow it on TV.

Would you be able to name the first, best and worst game you’ve ever been to?

The first was a League Cup game when I was really young – I think it was against someone like Walsall and we won something like 4-0. (Burp says: We googled it and our money’s on a 1990/91 League Cup tie that finished Chelsea 4-1 Walsall.)

I’ve been to some amazing games but one of the ones that sticks in my head is when we beat Barcelona 4-2 and Ronaldinho scored that ridiculous goal from the edge of the box.

Worst was probably losing the League Cup final to Spurs.

Finally, if you had to select a five-a-side team out of all the Chelsea players you’ve seen in your time as a fan, who would you pick?

Petr Čech, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Gianfranco Zola, Didier Drogba.

Hard to argue with. Steve Bird, thank you.
