Britain’s Got Talent finalist Gabz is hoping to be the first ever female solo artist to score a hit with an England World Cup song, the optimistic and sunnily disposed “Holiday in Brazil”, so we caught up with her for a bit of a natter about it all…
How did “Holiday in Brazil” come about?
A guy called Paul Baker approached me to say he’d written a World Cup song and asked if I’d like to sing on it.
I helped him rewrite some of the verses into a rap and we recorded it in the studio, then I got a load of my friends from school to be in the video!
How did you get Harry Styles in the video? A celebrity friend?
That wasn’t Harry Styles, it was a celebrity lookalike!
Oops. Oh well, at least I clocked the David Beckham and David Luiz lookalikes. So I gather you’re an Arsenal supporter – did you watch the FA Cup final?
I was actually quite busy so I only got to see the end of it, but I was happy with the result of course! Although my dad’s a Liverpool fan so I didn’t want to rub it in too much after they lost out on the title.
Are you going to be able to watch much of the World Cup in amongst your professional commitments?
I certainly hope so. If I’m able to, I will.
Who are your favourite England players?
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere because they’re from Arsenal!
Have you heard the official England World Cup song by Gary Barlow and Gary Lineker, and if so what do you think of it?
Yeah I heard it, I thought it was good. It’s not as much about football as our song is though, so I’m hoping that means our song will do well.
Did you take inspiration from World Cup songs of yesteryear?
Not really – Paul wrote it and he’s written other World Cup songs before. We’ve just tried to put our own twist on it and hopefully we’ve come up with something new and fresh.
Finally, who’s going to win the World Cup?
