Toby Alderweireld, Southampton – £5m
Saints’ impressive season had looked like imploding after a run of four straight defeats, but they’ve recovered to record three wins and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their subsequent four games.
This latest sequence has seen them record clean sheets against Arsenal and Everton, with Dutch international Alderweireld continuing to be a key player at a bargain price thanks to the more eye-catching attacking exploits of his teammates Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne.
Kieran Trippier, Burnley – £4.8m
Although he hasn’t been chipping in with assists at quite the same rate as he did in the Championship last season, he’s been playing well enough to suggest that a splurge could be imminent to go with the clean sheets he’s likely to keep as part of a tight Burnley defence.
Alan Hutton, Aston Villa – £4.4m
Part of a Villa back line that shuts out the opposition more regularly than they’re given credit for – that’s three in a row now in all competition’s following the 1-0 FA Cup win over Blackpool – and, as he showed against Leicester recently, Hutton can pop up with a goal.
Andre Wisdom, West Brom – £4.4m
If Tony Pulis can do for the Baggies what he did for Crystal Palace last season, their defenders could yet prove to be fantasy gold dust. At just £4.4m, Wisdom is the cheapest regular starter.
Geoff Cameron, Stoke City – £4.2m
